The Chartae Latinae Antiquiores are meant to provide scholars of various branches of learning concerning Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages - diplo­matics scholars, historians, paleographers, jurists, linguists, topographers, anthropologists - with an abstract, an edition, a description of external and internal features, a bibliography and a facsimile real size reproduction of all the surviving documents among those produced until the end of the 9th century. The first series of the Chartae Latinae Antiquiores (ChLA), founded and directed by Albert Bruckner and Robert Marichal, has been completed. It consists of forty-nine volumes and it includes papyrus and parchment documents produced prior to the year 800. This achievement was made possible by the active contribution of a large group of qualified scholars. The second series (ChLA2), which avails itself of the cooperation of likewise qualified specialists, starts with volume 50 and was founded by Guglielmo Cavallo and Giovanna Nicolaj. It aims at publishing all the documents of the 9th century preserved in European archives and libraries. The first phase of the project was dedicated to Italy and has been completed with the publishing of volume 99. Volume 100 marks the beginning of the series dedicated to St. Gall and is with its 12 volumes the largest collection of charters outside Italy. Volumes 112 to 114 are dedicated to the charters of Spain. Volume 115 contains the private charters of Germany and volume 116 the charters of of Austria and Belgium. With the publication of volumes 117 (Addenda I, supplements of Italy) and 118 (Addenda II, supplements of Switzerland, Luxembourg and Spain) in autumn 2019, the series Chartae Latinae Antiquiores will be completed. This second project was adopted by the UAI in 1958, on the initiative of the Swiss Academy of Humanities.
