Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts

The Cyprus Academy was founded by "The Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts Law of 2017", voted unanimously by the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus, on 10 November 2017, under which the Academy is established as a Legal Entity of Public Law based in Nicosia.

According to the Founding Law, the Cyprus Academy is independent and completely autonomous Institution in its aims and its goals, and the Highest Intellectual Institution of Cyprus in the Sciences, Letters, and Arts.

The Cyprus Academy had its first formal meeting on 10 May 2019, and elected its first five-member Presidium consisting of the President, the Vice President, the General Secretary and two Members.

Missions of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts

  • Recognize and promote excellence in Science, Letters, and Arts.
  • Cultivate mutual interaction between the Sciences, the Letters and the Arts and establish a Permanent Dialogue between the Sciences and the Humanities.
  • Contribute to the development of research and innovation in the Republic of Cyprus.
  • Support excellence in education.
  • Enhance and promote collaboration between Universities, Research Centers and Industry in the Republic of Cyprus.
  • Strengthen the international visibility of Cyprus by promoting the work of its Scientists, Artists and Intellectuals.
  • Provide scientifically-sound knowledge and independent advice to the State and its Institutions.
  • Participate and actively interact with other European and World Academies and Academy Organizations.
  • Establish bilateral collaborations between National Academies of other countries, especially those in the Near East and Eastern Mediterranean region.
  • Promote and support Education in Cyprus and strengthen the Academic and Research Institutions of the country, as well as the cooperation among universities, research centers and industry.
  • Provide science literacy to the citizens.
  • Establish the Academy as a permanent center for international interdisciplinary dialogues between the Natural Sciences, the Social Sciences and the Humanities seeking mutual understanding of and holistic approaches to the problems faced by a changing humanity under the accelerating influence of a rapidly advancing science and science-based technology.
